Burch Elementary School offers several extra-curricular activities for it's students. Some of these activities require the student to 'try out' while others are first come first serve. Information on the following activities will be sent home with the children when it is time for the activities to begin.
The Burch Elementary After School Program is a voluntary extension of the regular school day. The students are able to remain at school to obtain quality after school care. The program provides activities in a structured and safe environment which stress responsible behavior, respect for others, positive attitudes, and educational enrichment for all participants. Snacks are provided for all students. Study time, physical activity and enrichment programs are included in the daily schedule.
The Burch Elementary School Band is an extra-curricular activity for responsible and hard-working 5th graders. It is taught by the Sandy Creek High School Band Director
Students at Burch Elementary attend music class one day each week from 30-50 minutes, depending on their grade level. Based on the Fayette County Schools Elementary Music Curriculum and guidelines provided by the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum, lessons provide opportunities for students to develop and expand basic music skills through movement, singing, playing instruments, creating music, and performing. Students are introduced to a "Musician of the Month" and an "Instrument of the Week" to enhance knowledge of composers and instrument families. Mrs. Teague also works with classroom teachers to integrate music into classroom content area studies.
Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to sing in the Burch Chorus, which meets on Monday or Tuesday afternoons from 2:30-3:30. Students perform for the school’s Fall Festival, Sandy Creek High School Craft Fair, Tyrone Christmas Tree Lighting, Burch Fine Arts Festival, and special school assemblies.
Students are asked to make a $15.00 donation for music and other supplies. Students are responsible for purchasing their own chorus uniform.
The purpose of the Burch Juggling Team sponsored by JoDee Hubbert, is to provide additional juggling skills for some of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and to represent our school at various community events. The Jammin Jugglers have performed at our neighboring schools and various other school assemblies. Students are asked to purchase a shirt at a cost of 15.00.
The purpose of the Burch Little Dribblers team, sponsored by JoDee Hubbert, is to provide basic ball handling skills for interested 2nd and 3rd grade students and to represent Burch Elementary at various community functions. Practice is normally at 7:30 a.m. They have performed at Sandy Creek High School and Flat Rock Middle School basketball games, as well as school assemblies. Students are asked to pay 25.00 to purchase a ball and shirt.
The Running Club is available to all students from 2nd through 5th grade. The students have the option of walking or running every morning before school from 7:20 – 7:45 on the Burch track. The number of laps walked/run are recorded daily and a running total will be kept. There will be incentives for students at various milestones and the total miles will accumulate from year to year.
There is a $10 fee to join which helps to pay for a Running Club shirt for each participant, as well as for the incentives given throughout the year.
The Running Club is a great way to reinforce the health and fitness goals of the P.E. program by encouraging daily exercise. It is also an excellent way for students to work off some excess energy before they go to class in the morning!
In addition to running in the mornings, there will be opportunities throughout the year for students to participate in races all over Fayette County. These races will add to their running total, and there are other prizes they can win as well.
There will be information sent home at the beginning of the school year, but students may join at any time. For more information contact Coach Nails.
